Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. She did not consider a career in acting until she reached adulthood, as her parents were worried about the detrimental effects that stress could have. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. She began doing it to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry managed to get small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, led her back to California and she returned performing in the stage. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was performed at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. The same year, she portrayed a child version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother as a young version. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she received the role through an audition.
