Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman has replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor following Arthur Darvill left the series she would play the role with Matt Smith. Moffat said that he chose Coleman for the role of companion because she could work best with Smith. Also, Moffat noted that she was more talkative than Smith.
